How to trade using AI?
Place, manage and schedule trades through Claude, ChatGPT or Grok connected to your Light Horse account — in plain language, with every order previewed before you confirm it.
You can trade through an AI assistant the same way you would ask a person to do it: say what you want in plain language, look at the order it puts in front of you, and confirm. Once Claude, ChatGPT or Grok is connected to your Light Horse account, the assistant can pull quotes, preview and place orders for stocks, ETFs and options, cancel them, and report back — all inside the conversation you are already having.
This page covers what that looks like in practice, what the assistant does before an order goes out, how to put standing tasks on a schedule, and which trading rules apply exactly as they always did.
Two ways to trade with an assistant
In conversation. You give an instruction, the assistant gathers what it needs — the current quote, your buying power, the position you are selling from — and shows you a preview of the order. You confirm; it places the order and tells you when it fills. This is the normal way to trade, and every discretionary decision belongs here.
On a schedule. The assistant can run a prompt you write on a recurring schedule — every weekday at 9:35, every Friday at 4:15 — and send you the result by push notification or email. This is how you delegate monitoring, reporting and standing instructions.
Developers who want a fixed rule executed at machine speed without a conversation at all have a traditional third option, the Trading API.
Placing an order in plain language
Any of these works as written:
Buy 10 shares of AAPL at market.
Place a limit order to buy 5 shares of TSLA at $350
Sell half of my NVDA position.
Deposit $500 and put it into VOO.
Managing orders is the same conversation:
Show me my open orders.
Cancel the TSLA limit order.
Did my AAPL order fill? At what price?
What happens before an order is placed
Every order goes through the same two steps, and the second cannot happen without the first.
- Preview. The assistant asks Light Horse to preview the order. The preview returns the estimated cost, any warnings — insufficient buying power, an unusual price relative to the market — and a confirmation token for that specific order.
- Confirm and place. The assistant shows you the preview. When you confirm, it places the order using that token. Placing an order requires a token from a preview, so the assistant cannot skip the preview or place something other than what it showed you.
On top of that, AI clients such as Claude and ChatGPT ask for your permission before running a tool that changes your account. Between the two, nothing is bought or sold in a live conversation without you seeing it and saying yes. If the assistant misunderstood — wrong symbol, wrong quantity, limit where you meant market — the preview is where you catch it. Just telling "no, actually make it 5 shares" is all it takes.
Putting tasks on a schedule
The assistant can create a schedule that runs a prompt of your choosing at a set time, in New York time, and deliver the result by push notification or email. You can list, edit, pause and delete schedules the same way you created them — by asking.
Monitoring and reporting are the natural fit:
Please create a schedule to run Every weekday at 4:15 PM, summarize today's fills and my closing balance, and email it to me.
Create a scheduled workflow to run every Monday at 9:00 AM: check my positions for anything down more than 10% from cost and send me a push notification if there are any.
A scheduled run happens without you in the conversation, so provide all details and be deliberate about what you put on one: keep discretionary decisions in a live chat where you confirm each order, and use schedules for the tasks you would give the same answer to every time.
The rules that still apply
The assistant is an interface to your account, not an exception to it. Everything that governs your account governs orders placed through an assistant.
- Buying power checks. Light Horse will not execute an order on an account that has not enough buying power.
- Options require options approval on a margin account. Once approved, the assistant can pull an option chain, and preview and place options orders. See options trading.
- Short selling requires a margin account and share availability. See short selling and margin trading.
- Costs. $0 commission on US stocks and ETFs, a per-contract fee on options, and regulatory fees on sells — the same whether you or your assistant placed the order. See pricing.
- Decisions are yours. Light Horse is a self-directed brokerage. The assistant can research a company, explain a strategy, and tell you what a trade would do to your portfolio. It is not an adviser, and it does not know your goals or your other accounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ChatGPT or Claude actually place trades?
Yes. Once Light Horse is connected as an MCP connector and you have authorized it, the assistant can preview and place stock, ETF and options orders, cancel them, and check their status — on your instructions, after showing you a preview.
Will the AI trade without asking me?
Not in a conversation. Every order is previewed, and placing it requires a confirmation token that only a preview produces, so the assistant cannot place an order it has not shown you. Scheduled prompts run without you present by design, so use them for standing tasks and keep discretionary trades in a live chat.
Can I cancel an order through the AI?
Yes. "Show my open orders" lists them and "cancel the TSLA order" cancels one. Orders that have already filled cannot be canceled, through an assistant or otherwise.
Can the AI pick stocks for me?
It can research, compare and explain, and it can show you what a trade would do to your portfolio. It is not a registered adviser and Light Horse is a self-directed brokerage: the decision to trade is yours.
Does trading through an AI cost more?
No. Commissions and fees are the same as in the app: $0 on US stocks and ETFs, a per-contract fee on options, and regulatory fees on sells. See pricing. Your assistant's own subscription, if any, is separate.
Which AI assistants can I trade with?
Claude, ChatGPT and Grok have step-by-step guides in AI Integrations. Any client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth can connect.
